The early bird gets the holiday
Talk of a new bank holiday is never far from people’s lips and St. Georges Day was yet another flashpoint. Many of us sat in our offices wondering how we could heed the Daily Mail’s call to celebrate our national day while still carrying on with our jobs.
The fact is a day of national celebration isn’t quite the same if you’re stuck in front of your computer with the same steam of phone calls and emails as any other working day. One thing’s for sure - a new bank holiday would enjoy be hugely popular. Thomas Cook’s petition for a new bank holiday has half a million signatures and opinion polls constantly show over 90 per cent support. But for a new bank holiday to become a reality, politicians need to be persuaded that we deserve an extra day off.
With this in mind, campaigners have been pressing MPs to back a new bank holiday. And despite all the mania around tax and local elections, 37 Labour MPs have already signed an Early Day Motion (EDM - a kind of popularity contest for Parliamentary issues) calling for a new bank holiday.
You can find which MPs have signed the EDM at the Parliament website. If your own MP hasn’t signed up, why not ask them to sign EDM 1400? What possible reason could they have for not wanting their hard-working constituents to have an extra day off to spend with friends and family?
